MS Comprehensive Exams

An MS student will be required to demonstrate a general, comprehensive knowledge of his or her field of study. There are two distinct ways in which this comprehensive knowledge requirement can be demonstrated.

  1. An MS student may successfully pass three PhD written comprehensive exams at a level appropriate for an MS degree.   Visit the PhD Comprehensive Exams page for detailed information about the PhD comprehensive exams.
  2. An MS student may successfully pass one written exam for the specific purpose of fulfilling the MS requirement. Such an exam shall be administered by a committee of at least three graduate faculty members, with committee and committee chair chosen by the student and approved by the Graduate Coordinator. This exam should not be specialized to one area, and may include material from linear algebra and advanced calculus. In the event that the student's performance on this exam is marginal, the committee may elect to give the student an additional oral examination.
