<div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"> <p>A team of researchers from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette who attended the city’s recent Mardi Gras King’s Parade wasn’t interested in catching beads or doubloons.</p>
<p>It was after data.</p>
<p>The group of four, which included students and postdoctoral researchers, fanned out along the parade route. The floats rolled from near the intersection of Jefferson, Surrey and Simcoe streets, and ended near Cajun Field. <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"> Several of our sutudents and faculty attended the Louisiana Mississippi sectional meeting of the Mathematical Association of America on 16-18 February 2017 at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.
Two of our students placed first in student paper/presentation competitions.
Alex Fontenot placed first in the undergradute student paper/presentation competition. The title of his talk is <em>Characterizing the Behavior of the Difference Equation x_n+1=(ax_n+b)(mod 1)</em> (Ross Chiquet served as Alex's advisor).

<div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"> <p>Tingting Tang's research was the subject of an article on the <a href="http://gulfresearchinitiative.org/" target="_blank">Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) website.</a></p>
<p>When disaster strikes, responders look at how creatures in its path may be impacted to mitigate damage. Tingting takes the process one step further, using mathematical models to predict how long recovery may take. <p>John has been President of the UL Lafayette Math Society for two years, has worked on undergraduate research in Mathematics, and represented the Math department in the student team competition at the Mathematical Association of America Louisiana Mississippi regional conference three years in a row, where they placed second twice and first once. <p>Honors students from Dillard University, Grambling State University, Southern University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe and the University of New Orleans also competed. <p>We had two teams (coached by Ross Chiquet) compete in the Student Test Competition . Team A with members John Patterson, Austin Hansen, Alex Fontenot, and Brianna Lawson placed 2nd overall.
