Careers that require an advanced math degree typically have some of the best work environments — so you can find a low-stress, high-paying, and flexible job that still lets you make significant contributions to your field.
Your math graduate degree will give you the analytical and problem-solving skills needed for any job after graduation, whether that’s working in academia or in the private or public sectors.
April is Mathematics Awareness Month. The goal of Mathematics Awareness Month is to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics.
Please come and join us for our mathematics awareness celebration from 3 until 4:30 on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, in 208 Maxim Doucet Hall.
You will get to meet and mingle with mathematics faculty and students.
Thomas Credeur, one of our mathematics majors, is a member, in fact the president, of the UL Lafayette Quiz Bowl team which earned the state championship title at the most recent Louisiana Collegiate Honors Conference.
Honors students from Dillard University, Grambling State University, Southern University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe and the University of New Orleans also competed. The Honors College at Grambling State University hosted the conference.
Poker is a game of imperfect information played by millions of people from all over the world. We will talk about betting and how humans fail to recognize good bets when relying solely on intuition. We will discuss the need of a game theoretical approach and the results of a team of computer scientists from the University of Alberta. Finally we will sketch an analysis of a hand of no limit hold'em poker.
Eight of our undergraduate mathematics students attended the Louisiana/Mississsippi Section of the Mathematical Association of America annual meeting at Louisiana State University at Shreveport (February 25-27, 2016 in Shreveport).
We had two teams (coached by Ross Chiquet) compete in the Student Test Competition . Team A with members John Patterson, Austin Hansen, Alex Fontenot, and Brianna Lawson placed 2nd overall. Team B with members Nick Pyfrom-Day, Rainey Lyons, Bailey Ross, and Alyssa Bienvenu placed 3rd overall.
Come find out how mathematics is used to model the spread of infectious diseases such as ebola. Professor Browne, an assistant professor in our department of mathematics, specializes in the application of differential equations and dynamical systems to model population dynamics and the evolution of infectious diseases.
Chris Rogers of the UL Lafayette mathematics department will discuss graduate school for mathematics at the Math Club meeting on 19 February 2016 (11:00 in Maxim Doucet room 201). NOTE: We have changed the room. Please come to 201.
Please join us in congratulating Nabendu Pal on his selection as a College of Sciences Outstanding Professor.
There will be a ceremony and reception on Thursday, 25 February 2016, to honor Professor Professor Pal, along with Mark Hester of biology, Febee Louka of chemistry and Patricia Mire of biology.
